Pride 2021: Updating My Pronouns

Updated: Jun 13, 2021

I have officially changed my pronouns to he/they.

I must admit, I have known that both he/him and they/them pronouns fit my expression and identity for sometime. That said, I have struggled to publicize it because I realize, for many, he/him pronouns are likely the more natural and easy-to-use pronouns to reference me. Because both pronoun sets feel right to me, I feared encouraging the usage of they/them in addition, knowing it may come across as overly complicated, attention-seeking, or some other critique.

That changed when #DemiLovato shared their pronouns with the world. If someone with their platform, reach, and past can choose to be so open and honest with the world, why can’t I? I am someone who preaches authenticity, inclusion, and belonging. Yet, for too long, I have excluded part of myself for the ease of others. That ends today.

While subject to change, from hence forth, I use both he/him and they/them pronouns. My pronouns are he/they, and you can use either pronoun set when referencing me.

PS. This discovery and change is most impactful to myself. It really doesn’t change much for you or anyone else, but for me, the discovery and choosing to fully embrace it, is huge. And, just in time for pride!
