International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia
Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. The day was created in 2004 in an effort to acknowledge violence and discrimination experienced by LGBTQ+ people.
May 17th was selected as the day to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder on May 17th, 1990 - 30 years ago today.
It’s crazy to think how recent this ruling was. In many ways, the queer movement has been one of the fastest movements of all time. In many ways, we still have so much more to go. Thinking of all my LGBTQ+ brothers & sisters lost to violence.
