As a queer person, there have always been traditions at weddings I have never identified with. That said, this weekend I went to my first wedding since COVID-19, and something the bride’s mom said really stuck with me.
During her speech, she said, “If this past year has taught us anything, it’s why moments like this are so important. Sure, we are here to celebrate love, but we are also here to connect with others, meet people who have touched this couple’s lives in different ways, honor traditions set by family, religion or background, and ultimately, connect with each other through this unique shared experience. This shared day. It’s why I believe this celebration has been a tradition for over 4000 years. Here’s to many more moments like this. God knows we need it.”
