After last yearβs pride celebration honoring the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, we kickoff pride month this year in a seemingly different world.
π€ Last year, five million people took to the streets of New York to celebrate pride.
π€ Over the weekend, thousands of New Yorkers took to the streets to respond to the death of George Floyd.
β13 people were arrested on the first night of the Stonewall Riots.
β Friday night, nearly 200 people were arrested in NYC on the first night of George Floyd protests.
A lot has changed over the last 50 years, but whatβs even more surprising is how much hasnβt.
Remember:
π³οΈβπ Pride itself is a celebration of protests.
π³οΈβπ Being openly LGBTQ+ itself is political.
π³οΈβπ The LGBTQ+ movement itself began because queer black and brown folx rioted against police brutality.
We can never lose sight of our history.
We can never lose sight of what needs to change today.
We can never lose sight of the future we demand.
Happy Pride Month to everyone under the LGBTQ+ umbrella. May we continue to fight and celebrate alongside each other, demanding a more equitable world.
